Birds in the flue and the timing of a new cap
Chimney swifts nest inside open flues, and the species is on the federal list of migratory birds protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. An active nest cannot simply be pulled out so a cap can go on. When our pros hear chirping or see birds dropping into the chimney at dusk, the cap is scheduled for after the birds have gone.
Other animals follow their own rules, and Florida wildlife rules restrict when bats may be excluded from a building. Tell us what you have seen or heard when you call. If something is living in the chimney now, the removal work comes first and the cap follows, so no animal is ever sealed inside.
Taking off the old cap without harming the tile
Removing a failed cap is half the job. Rusted bolts may need cutting, adhesive has to be released from the crown, and a slip-in cap can be wedged against a tile that has already cracked. Forcing it free can snap the tile top, which turns a cap job into a flue repair.
Our team works the old cap loose with the tile in mind, clears the old fasteners and adhesive and checks the tile edge before the new cap goes on. If the tile was already broken, you see it and get options before anything else happens.
A cracked flue tile under the cap
Clay flue tiles can crack at the top edge, where a clamp bears on them or where the crown meets the tile. A cap fastened to a cracked tile loses its grip, and water can enter the crack and run down the outside of the liner. Replacing the cap alone leaves that crack in place.
Our pros check the tile edge before any cap goes on. A small chip may be fine under a crown-mounted cap, while a crack that runs down the tile is a flue repair, and you hear about it with its own price before the cap is ordered.
When an old cap can go back on
A cap that has come loose but is otherwise sound can sometimes be refastened with new hardware. The lid has to be solid, the frame straight, the screen intact and the mounting surface sound. A cap that fails any one of those checks is a false saving.
Our pros go through those points before suggesting a refit, and they recommend reusing a cap only when it will hold. If the old cap cannot be saved, the replacement is quoted in writing with each metal option.
