As smoke rises through the flue and cools, creosote condenses on the walls. It starts as loose soot, can harden into a crusty layer and at its worst becomes a glazed coating that is difficult to remove. All of it can burn, and a flue fire can crack a liner or spread beyond the chimney.

The right interval between sweeps comes down to how much wood you burn, what kind it is and how well the fire draws. Seasoned hardwood burned hot leaves less behind than damp wood or a fire left smoldering. A sensible routine is a yearly inspection with a sweep whenever deposits have built up, rather than a fixed calendar.

A sweep is more than brushing the flue. We protect the room, brush the flue from the top or bottom as the chimney requires, clean out the smoke shelf and the firebox, work the damper and look for cracks the deposits were hiding. The soot and debris are bagged and hauled away, and the written record you receive lists what was swept and what we found.

Some signs call for a visit sooner, such as a strong odor from the fireplace when the air is humid, smoke drifting into the room, black flakes on the hearth or a fire that is hard to start. Nesting animals can also block a flue, and a cap with a screen keeps them out. Gas fireplaces need a different kind of care.
