Sheathing and the weather barrier behind the siding
Behind the siding, a chase needs solid sheathing and a water-resistive barrier lapped so water runs down and out. Section R703.2 of the Florida residential code calls for that barrier behind exterior wall coverings. When the layer has gaps, or was torn during an earlier patch, water that gets past the siding has nowhere to go but into the wood.
Our team replaces damaged sheathing, installs the barrier shingle-fashion from the bottom up and laps it over the flashing where the chase meets the roof. It is the layer you never see after the job, and it does much of the work of keeping the new framing dry.
Siding that matches the house and sheds water
Chase siding is replaced to match the house where it can be, whether lap siding, panel siding, fiber cement or stucco. Each product has its own installation instructions for clearance at the roof line, joint treatment and fastening, and siding makers treat those details as part of keeping the wall dry.

Why paint and caulk cannot fix a rotted chase
Fresh paint and a bead of caulk make a stained chase look fine from the street for a while. They cannot restore wood that has already softened, and caulk laid over a gap that moves will split again. A new coat can even hold moisture in wood that is already wet.
