Factory-built or masonry, the first decision
A new wood-burning fireplace is one of two things. A factory-built fireplace is a manufactured firebox, tested as a system with its own chimney pipe and installed inside framing. A masonry fireplace is built on site from firebrick, brick or block and concrete, and it stands on a foundation of its own.

Hearth and hearth extension for masonry
Section R1001.9 of the Florida residential code requires masonry hearths and hearth extensions to be built of concrete or masonry on noncombustible support. The hearth is at least 4 inches thick and the extension at least 2 inches. Section R1001.10 sizes the extension to project 16 inches in front of the opening and to run 8 inches wider than it on each side, and for an opening of 6 square feet or more the figures rise to 20 inches in front and 12 inches at each side.

Outside air for the fire
A wood fire uses a lot of air. Section R1006.1 of the Florida residential code requires an outside air supply for the fireplace, with an exception for a room whose mechanical ventilation keeps the indoor pressure neutral or positive. For factory-built units, section R1006.1.1 requires the air duct to be a listed component installed per the fireplace instructions.

Reusing an old fireplace opening
Remodels sometimes uncover an old fireplace opening, or a family wants a fireplace back where one used to be.
