Direct-vent and B-vent gas fireplaces

A direct-vent fireplace is sealed from the room. It draws all of its combustion air from outside through one part of its vent and sends exhaust out through the other, as described in the Florida fuel gas code (section 303.3) and the makers' manuals. A B-vent unit takes its combustion air from the room and vents up through its own pipe.

For most new installations, direct-vent is the practical choice because it leaves room air alone and can vent through a wall or roof. Our pros explain which type your model is and why it suits your room.

Does the fireplace need a hearth

Whether a gas fireplace needs a hearth or floor protection in front, and how far it must reach, comes from the manual for the model. Some raised installations need none, while others call for a noncombustible surface in front.

Access for future service

Controls and access panels have to stay reachable, because a gas fireplace needs occasional service. The fuel gas code (section 604.2) adds that panels, grilles and access doors removed for normal servicing must not be attached to the building.
