The hearth extension for a factory-built unit
The floor in front of a wood fireplace needs protection from sparks and rolling embers. For factory-built units, section R1004.2 of the Florida residential code has the hearth extension installed as the fireplace listing directs, and it must be easy to tell apart from the floor around it. A listed hearth extension must comply with UL 1618.

Hearth and hearth extension for masonry
Section R1001.9 of the Florida residential code requires masonry hearths and hearth extensions to be built of concrete or masonry on noncombustible support.
