How rain finds its way into a chase
Water has a handful of ways into a wood chase. A rusted or flat cover lets it pool and drip through seams. Siding joints and corner trim open as caulk ages. The junction with the roof depends on step flashing with the siding lapped over it. And a storm collar that has lost its seal lets water run down the outside of the pipe.

Where the chase meets the roof
The joint between the chase and the roof takes water from the whole slope above it. Section R703.4 of the Florida residential code calls for corrosion-resistant flashing at wall and roof intersections, applied shingle-fashion so water is turned out. On a chase that means step flashing woven into the shingles and turned up the wall, with the barrier and siding lapped over it.
A missing piece, lifted shingles or siding that sits down on the roofing can let water run straight into the framing. Our pros check the flashing on every side of the chase and repair it along with the siding, so the roof joint and the wall close together. If the roof itself needs more than the chase area, you hear that too.
The storm collar and the top of the pipe
At the spot where the chimney pipe comes up through the chase cover, a storm collar throws water clear of the opening. Manufacturer instructions for listed systems have the collar slid down snug and sealed where it meets the pipe, and one manual warns against caulking the pipe directly to the collar on the chase top. The ventilation openings those parts need are left open.
Water that gets past a failed collar runs down the pipe and into the chase. Our pros check the collar and the termination cap during chase work and replace them with parts listed for your system when they have failed, so the repaired walls are not soaked again from the top.
Water on the uphill side of a chase
A chase on a sloped roof sits in the path of the water running down from above, and its uphill side takes a heavy share of it.
