Raking out old mortar to the right depth
Good tuckpointing starts with removing enough old mortar. The Brick Industry Association's maintenance note has failed mortar cut back evenly to twice the joint width or more, roughly three quarters of an inch on a standard joint, and further wherever the mortar is still soft.
