Hearth cracks and settling
A masonry hearth has to carry its own weight on noncombustible support, and code section R1001.9 adds that no combustible material may stay against its underside after construction. Cracks across the hearth, tiles that lift or a hearth that has dropped away from the firebox can point to trouble underneath.
Our pros check whether the damage is in the surface or in the support below. Surface repairs are priced as surface repairs. When the support has failed, the hearth has to be rebuilt on a sound base, and you see that option in writing first.
Hearth extension thickness and raised fireboxes
Thickness matters as much as size. A masonry hearth extension is normally at least 2 inches thick, and the exception in code section R1001.9.2 allows 3/8 inch of approved noncombustible material only when the firebox opening's bottom edge is raised 8 inches or more above the extension.
That matters when tile or stone is replaced over an old hearth, because a thin new surface can look finished while falling short underneath. Our pros check the build-up before recommending a new face for the hearth.
Loose tile and stone around the opening
The facing around the opening takes heat every time the fireplace is used. Tile that has come loose, grout that has cracked out or stone that has shifted can let heat reach the wall behind, and the materials close to the opening have to be noncombustible.
Our specialists reset or replace loose facing with setting materials made for the heat near a fireplace, and they check for combustible backing that should not be there. You approve the materials and the price before work starts.
Glass doors on the fireplace
Glass doors have to suit the fireplace they are mounted on. Accessories for masonry fireplaces are installed to their listing and the maker's instructions (R1001.13, UL 907), and a factory-built fireplace can take a gasketed door only if its own listing allows one (R1004.5).
