The brick around the liner still has a job

One major liner maker's instructions set a similar minimum for the masonry shell before its liner can be installed. A thin or damaged shell is a problem the liner cannot solve on its own.

Connecting a liner to an open fireplace
In an open masonry fireplace, the liner usually starts at the top of the smoke chamber. The instructions we follow seal the gap there with a ceramic blanket plug or a base plate and sleeve, with the liner kept centered.
That seal keeps smoke inside the liner instead of letting it spread into the old flue around it. Clay liners in new construction likewise start at the top of the smoke chamber under the Florida Building Code.

Permits and local requirements for relining
Liner instructions remind installers to check local building and fire requirements, and note that permits may be required before work starts. Local rules decide whether a permit applies to your job.
