A water repellent does not replace a damaged brick

The Brick Industry Association rates a water repellent as rarely effective here and advises against using one as a substitute for cutting out brick whose face has spalled or cracked through. A repellent cannot put back material that is gone.

BIA also advises waiting several months after repairs are finished and inspected before deciding whether a repellent is needed, because the repairs themselves often solve the moisture problem.

We follow that order. Physical repairs come first, and any treatment is a separate, later decision that we will discuss honestly if you ask.

Choosing the mortar that goes around new bricks

Around replacement bricks, the Brick Industry Association calls for a mortar whose physical properties resemble the existing mortar, and it warns that the wrong mix can make the surrounding masonry spall and crack. It generally recommends Type N for modern work and Type O where a more cement-rich mortar would be too strong.

Color matters too. BIA suggests comparing new mortar samples with the existing mortar both wet and fully dry, since mortar changes color as it dries.

Matching replacement bricks to the chimney

A replacement brick should match the existing brick in size, color and texture, and also in how it behaves. The Brick Industry Association notes that locating a matching brick can take considerable effort, and recommends judging the match against the existing work with a sample.

A close color match that absorbs water very differently, or a brick of the wrong size that forces thick joints, can create new problems. We weigh physical suitability alongside appearance.

Scheduling brick work around heat and sun

Fresh mortar needs time to cure, and drying too fast weakens it. According to the National Park Service, keeping the wall between 40 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit guards against freezing and against water leaving too quickly, and repointing is best done in shade, out of strong sunlight, particularly in hot weather.

We plan brick and joint work with that in mind, working in shade where we can and protecting fresh work from direct sun and rain. That can mean scheduling one face of the chimney for a particular time of day.
