Three reasons a chimney ends up relined

Most relining jobs start from one of three places. The existing lining is damaged, there is no suitable lining at all, or the appliance connected to the chimney is changing.

Each starting point leads to different questions. A damaged lining raises the question of what damaged it. A missing lining raises questions about the masonry. A new appliance brings its own venting instructions.

Sizing a liner for a stove, insert or other appliance

When an appliance is connected, its instructions and the venting codes set the flue size. The Florida Building Code also keeps a chimney flue at least as large in area as the appliance connector.

Liner instructions add that the appliance outlet should not be larger than the liner at its narrowest point unless a qualified person has sized the liner to suit that appliance. Two appliances that look alike can still call for different flue sizes.

Finishing the top of a relined chimney

The top of a liner system usually includes a top plate that seals the flue opening, a storm collar and a cap. Instructions we follow set the plate in a bead of high-temperature silicone and trim the liner flush with the collar.

Those parts are made for the liner they come with. Mixing a cap from one system with a liner from another is not part of a listed installation.

Questions to ask before choosing a liner quote

Relining quotes are easier to compare when each one answers the same questions. The liner material alone says little about the job.

• Which fireplace or appliance is the liner sized for, and what size was chosen?
• Is cleaning of the existing flue included before installation?
• Does the liner listing require insulation, and is it included?
• How will the bottom of the liner be connected and sealed?
• Which top plate, cap and crown seal are included?
• Will the liner be labeled with its date and intended use?
