Why strong acid stays off the brick
Unbuffered muriatic acid is a common shortcut for cleaning brick, and industry guidance warns against it. Mixed too strong or left too long, acid can etch the brick face, eat into the mortar and leave burn marks that are harder to fix than the soot.
Light-colored brick can also react to acidic cleaners with yellow or green stains. Our specialists choose cleaners made for the brick in front of them and test before using them across the face.
Parging the smoke chamber smooth
The smoke chamber funnels smoke from the damper into the flue. Section R1001.8 of the code calls for its inner surface to be parged smooth with refractory mortar, and an older chamber may have stepped brick or crumbling parging instead.

Wood trim and shelves on older fireplaces were not always placed with today's clearances in mind. Under the exceptions to code section R1001.11, combustible trim stays at least 6 inches from the opening, and where it sits within 12 inches, it can stick out no more than 1/8 inch for each inch it is from the opening.
