Heater-rated or decorative
Vented gas fireplaces come in two broad groups. Units tested to ANSI Z21.88 are gas fireplace heaters, meant to warm the room, while units tested to ANSI Z21.50 are vented decorative fireplaces, chosen mainly for the flame. The fuel gas code (sections 604.1 and 605.1) ties each type to its standard and to the maker's instructions.
If you want real warmth on cool evenings, a heater-rated model makes sense. If the fireplace is mostly for looks, a decorative unit may fit better. Our specialists read the rating plate with you before you decide.
Sizing the fireplace to the room
Each gas fireplace carries an input rating. A unit that is too large for a small room ends up switched off because it makes the space too warm, and one that is too small for a large, open room may never feel like much.
Our pros weigh the size of the room, whether it opens onto other rooms and the way you mean to use it, then point you to models in a sensible range. Controls with high and low settings widen that range further.
The gas supply to the fireplace
Running and connecting the gas supply is separate trade work, and your estimate names who handles it before any wall is opened. The line has to be sized for the fireplace's input, and the appliance needs its own shutoff where the code and the manual place it.
Our team plans the fireplace, the vent and the enclosure around that connection, and the location is agreed with the gas trade early, so the finished wall does not have to be opened again.
The mesh barrier over the glass
Fireplace glass on a gas unit runs hot enough to cause burns. The 2015 revisions of ANSI Z21.88 and ANSI Z21.50 brought in a barrier requirement for units whose glass passes a set temperature, which is why many newer models ship with a mesh screen in front.
