Sizing a liner for an open masonry fireplace
For a masonry fireplace, the Florida Building Code ties the flue area to the fireplace opening. Under the first of its two sizing options, a round flue must be at least one twelfth of the opening, a square flue one tenth, and a long rectangular flue one eighth.
That means the width and height of the opening are measured before any liner is chosen. A liner that simply fills the old flue may be too small for a large opening.

Using the fireplace after relining
Most relined chimneys can be used soon after installation, but some insulation products need gentle fires for a period while they dry. The product instructions set how long and how hot.
Your crew should tell you before leaving whether any break-in period applies. Firing hard straight away can work against a poured insulation that is still drying. A gentle start also gives any fresh mortar at the top time to finish curing.

Signs the existing lining has failed
A lining in trouble often shows itself below. Pieces of clay tile in the smoke chamber, gaps between tiles and heavy deposits packed into cracks are all reasons to look further.
Other signs are less direct, such as a flue that suddenly drafts poorly or an inspection note about open joints between tiles. None of these can be judged from the hearth alone. A flue that has sat unused for years deserves the same look before its first fire.
