A full inspection before the plan
The national standard for chimneys and fireplaces, NFPA 211, calls for chimneys, fireplaces and vents to be inspected for soundness, freedom from deposits and correct clearances. A restoration plan built on anything less is guesswork.

Cleaning soot from brick
Brick cleaning starts small. The Brick Industry Association's guidance on cleaning brickwork (Technical Note 20) calls for trying a method on a small, hidden area and letting it dry before judging the result, then choosing the gentlest method that works.
Our pros pre-wet the brick so the cleaner stays on the surface, keep it wet while they work and rinse thoroughly. Scrubbing harder or reaching for a stronger product is a last step, never the first.
Matching mortar color and texture
Mortar color comes mostly from its sand, and fresh mortar dries lighter than it looks when wet. That is why a match is judged on dry samples, a practice the Park Service's repointing guidance also describes.
