Cross-breaks and raised centers on chase covers
Fabricators give chase covers their pitch in a few ways. Diagonal cross-breaks pressed into the sheet form shallow ridges that run water toward the corners, and a raised center lifts the area around the collar above the edges. Both approaches also stiffen the metal so it holds its shape.

Tracing water from the top of the chase down
Water that reaches the room around a factory-built fireplace can come from several places. The cap, the storm collar, the cover and its seams, the siding joint and the roof flashing where the chase meets the roof can each let water in. Replacing the cover without checking the others can leave the leak in place.
We work from the top down, look at each junction in order and name the one that is failing. If the flashing or siding is the problem, the estimate says so, and the cover stays unless it has defects of its own. You pay for the repair that stops the water.
Where the chase sits on the house
Factory-built fireplace instructions describe more than one way to enclose the chimney. The manual for one widely sold series shows a fireplace and chimney enclosed in an exterior chase, a chimney offset through an exterior wall into a chase, and a chase built on the roof.
The cover is the same kind of part in each case, but the water paths around it differ. A chase on the roof also depends on the flashing at its base, while a chase on an outside wall depends on the siding and on the junction where the roof meets it. Wide chases on a sloped roof
Water running down a roof collects against the upslope side of anything wide that stands in its path. To turn that water aside, Florida's residential code requires a cricket, also called a saddle, on the uphill side of a chimney or penetration wider than 30 inches, measured across the slope.
When a wide chase on a roof leaks near its base, the cover may not be the only concern. We check whether a cricket is present where one is needed and explain any roofing work separately from the chase cover itself.
