How a standing pilot keeps the burner ready
On a standing-pilot fireplace, a small flame burns the whole time the unit is set to run. That flame heats a thermocouple, which proves to the gas valve that the pilot is lit, and on many models a thermopile beside it makes the millivolts that open the main burner through the wall switch or remote.
If the pilot flame is weak or bent away from those sensors, the valve closes and the fireplace goes quiet. The service manual shows how the flame should wrap each sensor, and our specialists clean or adjust the pilot to match that picture before looking at parts.
Checking the switch side of the circuit
On a millivolt system, the wall switch, remote receiver or thermostat closes the circuit that tells the valve to open the main burner. The service manual includes a test for this, jumping the switch terminals at the valve for a moment, which shows whether the fault sits in the control or in the valve itself.
Corroded terminals, loose wire nuts and long runs of thin wire can drop enough voltage to leave the burner dark while the pilot keeps burning. Our pros clean, tighten or replace the control wiring as the test shows, and the jumper never stays in place after testing.
When a spill switch shuts the fireplace down
Some natural-vent gas fireplaces carry a spill switch near the draft hood. It senses heat from exhaust rolling back into the room instead of rising up the vent, and it shuts the gas valve. On some models the switch has to be reset by hand.
A tripped spill switch is a warning. Our specialists look for the reason, such as a blocked or cold vent, before resetting it, and we never bypass one to keep a fireplace running.
Reaching the controls on a gas insert
Inserts tuck their valve, receiver and blower behind a front panel inside the old fireplace opening. Surround panels, trim kits and a snug fit against the masonry can make those parts slow to reach, and the vent liner runs up the old flue above.
Our pros plan the access before quoting, so the estimate includes any trim removal and refitting. Where an insert has to be eased forward for service, we protect the hearth and surround while it is out.
