What Goes Into a Thorough Chimney Sweep

The pipe between a stove and the chimney
On a wood stove, the connector pipe runs from the appliance to the chimney, and it collects deposits just as the flue does. NFPA 211 looks at how that pipe is supported, how its joints are fastened and how it is pitched, since a sagging or loose connector can leak smoke into the room.
We clean the connector along with the chimney and check its joints and support. If a section of the pipe in your Cheval home is corroded or pulled apart, we explain the fix before the stove is used again.
Emptying the cleanout at the base of the flue
Some masonry chimneys have a cleanout door near the bottom of the flue, where soot collects between sweeps. Florida's code calls for a noncombustible cover on that opening, and a door that is left open or has rusted through lets in air and pests.
Our sweeps empty the cleanout when the chimney has one, bag the debris and check that the door closes. It is a part of your Cheval chimney that is easy to forget until it is full.
Birds nesting in the flue
Chimney swifts nest inside masonry chimneys, and they are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. An active nest with eggs or young may not be disturbed, so the sweep has to wait until the birds have left, and the flue is then cleaned and capped.

Carbon monoxide alarms and a working chimney
A chimney that is blocked or badly coated can send carbon monoxide back into the house. Federal safety regulators at the Consumer Product Safety Commission advise a carbon monoxide alarm on each floor and near the bedrooms, running on batteries or with a battery backup.
A clean flue lowers that risk but does not replace an alarm. If that alarm sounds, get everyone out of the house and phone 911 from outside, and after that our Cheval team can track down the cause.
