A masonry firebox is built from firebrick set in refractory mortar, both made to withstand high heat. The mortar joints usually go first; they erode, open up and let heat reach the brick and masonry behind. Individual firebricks can crack, spall or loosen, and a back wall that leans forward or bulges is a sign the lining has come away from its backing.

We repoint open joints with refractory mortar and replace damaged brick with new firebrick of the same size. A factory-built fireplace has molded refractory panels in place of brick. Many manufacturers note that fine hairline cracks in these panels are normal and do not affect safety, but a crack wide enough to see through, a missing piece or a gap that exposes the metal behind means the panel needs replacing.

Only the panels listed for that model will do, since the firebox was tested with them in place. Look at the firebox in daylight with the fireplace cold and the ash cleared. Note any cracks, loose bricks, gaps in the joints or bare metal, and whether the damage seems to be growing. Do not patch firebox cracks with ordinary mortar or hardware-store caulk; neither is made for that heat, and a failed patch can hide damage we need to see.

Firebox repairs are priced upfront, brick by brick or panel by panel, with no hidden fees. We protect the hearth and floor while we work and take the old brick and debris away when we finish.
