Raking out the old joints by hand
Repointing only holds when the new mortar goes deep enough. Preservation Brief 2 calls for removing old mortar to a depth of two to two and a half times the joint width, plus any loose material behind it.
The same guidance names hand chisels and mash hammers as the least damaging tools. Our specialists rake joints by hand on older and softer brick, where a grinder can widen the joint and chip the brick edges.
Relining the firebox
A firebox lining that has lost joints, cracked through or been patched too many times is usually relined. Florida's residential code (R1001.5) calls for firebrick meeting ASTM C27 or C1261, set in medium-duty refractory mortar with joints no wider than a quarter inch.

Parging the smoke chamber smooth
The smoke chamber funnels smoke from the damper into the flue. Section R1001.8 of the code calls for its inner surface to be parged smooth with refractory mortar, and an older chamber may have stepped brick or crumbling parging instead.
