Sealing the storm collar the right way
A storm collar is the metal band that wraps the chimney pipe just above the collar on the cover. It sheds rain away from the gap around the pipe. The installation instructions for one common system call for caulking the gaps between the storm collar and the pipe, and between the storm collar and the chase top collar.
The same instructions warn against blocking the air holes at the termination. We seat the storm collar snugly, seal only where the instructions say to and leave every vent opening clear. A storm collar that has slipped or lost its seal is a simple source of leaks and one of the first things we check.
Measuring the chase before a cover is ordered
Chase covers are made to measure. A chase that looks square from the ground may differ by a fraction of an inch from side to side, and the pipe may sit off center. We measure every side of the chase, the position of each pipe from two edges and the diameter of each pipe before anything is fabricated.
Those measurements go on the order with the collar height, the turndown length and the slope detail. Ordering from a guess, or from the old cover's size, repeats any mistake the old cover had. Careful measuring is what lets the new cover fit on the day it is installed.
Chase covers for more than one chimney pipe
Where two factory-built fireplaces share a chase, the cover carries two openings and two collars. Each chimney has its own manufacturer's instructions for termination height and spacing, and the cover must not push either pipe out of position to line up with a hole.
We record the location of both pipes and their caps before the cover is ordered. If the existing layout raises a question about spacing or height, we explain it on the estimate rather than hiding it under new metal. The aim is a chase top where each system still meets its own instructions.
Chase covers on stucco-finished chases
Where a chase is finished in stucco rather than siding, the skirt of the cover laps over the stucco at the top edge. Cracks, stains or soft areas in the stucco just below the cover can be a sign that water has been getting behind the finish.
We check how the old skirt sat on the stucco and whether the top edge of the finish is sound before measuring. Stucco repair is separate work and appears on its own line, and the new cover is sized so its drip edge carries water clear of the stucco face.
