In repointing, harder is not better. The National Park Service's repointing brief wants new mortar weaker and more breathable than the brick it sits between. A mix that is too strong sends stress into the brick, and one that breathes less than the brick drives water and salts out through its face.

That is how chimneys end up with spalled brick next to hard cement patches. Our masons choose a mix that protects the brick on your Lithia chimney and gives way before the brick does.

Softer mortars for older or softer brick

Some brick is softer than today's standard units, and some older chimneys were laid in mortar rich in lime. Masonry guidance points to Type O mortar where cement-rich mixes would be too strong, and to Type K for historic masonry.
