Factory-built fireplaces and their chimneys are tested together as one system. Chimney makers such as DuraVent state in their instructions that parts from other systems must not be mixed in, and improvised pieces fall outside the listing.

When the opening and the flue are out of step
A fireplace draws best when the passage above the firebox, through the throat, damper and smoke chamber, is at least as large as the flue, as code section R1001.6 requires, and when the flue is sized to the opening under R1003.15.
A fireplace that has been altered, with a larger opening, a new firebox or a different damper, can end up out of proportion and smoke at the face. Our specialists measure the opening and the flue and explain whether a repair, a smoke guard or a change to the firebox will help.
Combustion air for the fireplace
A fire needs a steady supply of air. Code section R1006.1 calls for an exterior air supply unless the room is mechanically ventilated so indoor pressure stays neutral or positive, and R1006.2 asks for the intake to be covered with corrosion-resistant quarter-inch mesh.
Where an outside air kit exists, its damper can stick and its screen can clog with lint and leaves. On factory-built fireplaces the air duct must be a listed part of the unit (R1006.1.1). Our specialists clear, repair or replace the parts that belong to your system.
