Repointing open joints inside the firebox

A lintel, usually a steel angle, holds up the brick above a fireplace opening. Code section R1001.7 calls for a noncombustible lintel with at least 4 inches of bearing on each end.
Steel that rusts grows in size, and that growth can crack the joints above it, push brick out of line or let the angle sag. Brick industry guidance (BIA Technical Note 19) recommends leaving room at the lintel ends so the steel can expand with heat.
