What spalling looks like on a chimney

Spalling shows as a brick face that has flaked, popped off in a layer or crumbled away, leaving a rough, recessed surface. Fragments may collect on the roof, in the gutter or on the ground below.

Broken or badly spalled brick lets moisture in, the Brick Industry Association notes, and the damaged units may have to be replaced. A spalled brick is not just a cosmetic blemish, because it lets more water into the masonry around it.

Our inspection records which units have lost their face and how deep the loss goes, so the repair area is based on the actual damage.

How the repaired chimney will look

New bricks set into weathered masonry will look different at first, even when the match is good. The new mortar can also look brighter than joints that have aged for years.

We discuss the likely appearance before any work, including the size of the repair area and the mortar color. Over time, the new work tends to blend in, but we do not promise an invisible repair on day one.

The written estimate lists the bricks or the area to be replaced, the replacement brick and mortar, any joint work around the repair and the protection and cleanup involved. Related work, such as crown or flashing repair, appears on its own lines.

Exterior chimney brick and firebox brick are different jobs

The bricks inside a firebox are firebrick, set to handle direct heat, and they are repaired with materials made for that purpose. The bricks on the outside of the chimney are building brick exposed to the weather.
