Planning the vent route

Each direct-vent model comes with a vent table that ties how high the pipe rises to how far it can run sideways, and it limits the number of elbows. The route has to fit inside those limits from the back or top of the unit to the outside.

Our pros sketch the route in your home before you commit to a location, checking framing, joists and obstacles along the way. If a route does not fit the table, the fireplace moves or the model changes, before anything is ordered.

Where the vent can end on an outside wall

The vent cap outside has to keep set distances from openable windows and doors, fixed windows, soffits, porches, decks, the ground and walkways. Those distances come from a table based on ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54 that the manual reproduces, and some depend on the unit's input rating.

Our pros measure the outside wall against that table before settling on the inside location. A spot that looks perfect indoors sometimes lands too close to a window outside, and it is far better to learn that on paper.

Framing the fireplace enclosure

The manual gives the rough opening, the header height and the framing depth for each model. Drywall standoffs on the unit are there to space the finish, and they are not meant to carry framing.

Our pros frame the enclosure to those dimensions, or check your builder's framing against them, before the unit is set. Getting the box right is what lets the finish go on cleanly later.
