Soot and creosote in the flue
Every wood fire leaves some soot and creosote on the walls of the flue. NFPA 211 treats freedom from deposits as part of every inspection, because heavy deposits narrow the flue and can burn if they ignite.

An inspection after a storm
The National Hurricane Center counts hurricane season from June 1 to November 30. Wind can loosen caps, crack crowns and lift flashing without any sign inside the house. Debris on the roof, metal in the gutter or a cap that looks tilted from the ground are all worth mentioning when you get in touch.

The chimney cap and how it is mounted
The cap keeps rain, leaves and animals out of the flue. During the inspection our pros check that it is fastened securely, sized for the flue and free of rust, dents and clogged mesh.
One manufacturer's instructions keep multi-flue cap flanges at least an inch from the crown edge, so the anchors do not crack the concrete. Our specialists check the mounting as well as the condition, and a replacement cap is priced separately.
Stucco and siding on the chimney
Stucco-clad chimneys and framed chases with siding hide the structure underneath, so cracks, stains and soft spots in the finish are the clues. Stucco can look sound from the ground while the masonry under it is wet, and siding can hide a soft frame.
